Exquisite craftsmanship of these 14 karat yellow gold filigree shield jewelry set. The shields are beautifully detailed with granulation and fine filigree. Surrounded with many tiny balls all around the surface, known as granulation, with stamped gold convex figures. The center is provided with a flower motif featuring granulation and stamped gold. This 19th century cannetille filigree shield set featuring very fine filigree adornment applied on a handmade shield, which is very skillfully handcrafted and gives the impression of lace or fine embroidery.
 
This is such a delightful antique historical jewelry set! It would make an exceptional gift for an antique gold jewelry collector. The shields are in excellent antique condition. One hook at the back is partly missing.
 
These filigree shields were part of the regional dress, which were part of an 'ear iron'. It was unique and important of the national costume and tradition in The Netherlands. It started as a 'simple' accessory, a kind of peasant jewelry that women worn in some regions in The Netherlands. In the beginning created to secure expensive lace skullcaps from the gusts of sea winds, the simple iron band evolved into an ornate headdress, to display family wealth in the form of valuable metals and detailed filigree and cannetille.
